Steve Kim is a bass player and music instructor based in Seattle. He offers online or in-person individual or group lessons in music theory, improvisation, and electric or upright bass.

Performance credits include live and recorded performances with Larry Coryell, Alphonse Mouzon, Don Mock, Carter Jefferson, Dave Valentine, Jim Brock, Van Manakas, Jeff Simmons, Jay Thomas, Scott Cossu, Jon Jang, Garth Hudson and Nokie Edwards.

Steve was commissioned to compose for the Southern Arts Council, the Seattle Arts Commission, choreographers Bill Evans, Clay Talefero, Shirley Jenkins and Jeff Bickford, and filmmaker Eric Patton. Steve served as a cultural ambassador to represent the City of Seattle in Kobe, Japan, and was honored as a Centennial Artist during the Washington State Centennial Celebration. In 2007 he returned to Japan, touring with guitarist Brian Nova & vibraphonist Kiyoko Ami. Steve appeared on the 2014 solo release ” In Deep Owl ” by Soundgarden bassist Ben Sheppard.

Steve Kim has taught music since 1973. He served as associate faculty in the Music Technology department of Shoreline Community College from 1989-2021. He has also taught at Pacific Lutheran University, The National Guitar Workshop, The Experience Music Project, The All-Electric Bass Workshop at Seattle Pacific University, The Bill Evans Summer Institute Of Dance,  Music Works Northwest, Arts In Motion, and the Roberts Music Institute. In 2015, Steve was a recipient of The Evergreen State College Teacher Excellence Award.

Steve studied with bassists Ray Brown  and Gary Peacock, and improvisation and composition with pianist/composer Charlie Banacos. Steve offers online private lessons or in-person lessons at his studio in Seattle WA.
