Steve Kim is an accomplished bassist, composer and educator , based in Seattle, Washington, USA .
Steve currently appears as a solo artist, and in a group with percussionist Jacques Willis, and keyboardist Ryan Burns. His credits include live and recorded performances with Larry Coryell, Alphonse Mouzon, Don Mock, Carter Jefferson, Dave Valentine, Van Manakas, Jeff Simmons, Jay Thomas, Scott Cossu , and singer-songwriter Eric Fridrich .
He has been commissioned to compose for the Southern Arts Council, the Seattle Arts Commission, choreographers Bill Evans, Clay Talefero and Jeff Bickford, and filmmaker Eric Patton. In 1987 Steve served as a cultural ambassador representing the City of Seattle in Kobe, Japan, and in 1989 was honored as a Centennial Artist during the Washington State Centennial Celebration. In 2007 he returned to Japan, touring with guitarist Brian Nova & Vibraphonist Kiyoko Ami.
Steve Kim is a faculty member of the Shoreline Community College music department , and maintains a private teaching studio in Seattle . He has also taught at Pacific Lutheran University, The National Guitar Workshop, The Experience Music Project, Bill Evans Summer Institute Of Dance, Arts In Motion, and the Roberts Music Institute. Steve was a student of the bassists Ray Brown , Gary Peacock and of the late pianist/composer Charlie Banacos .
His second solo recording, entitled The Book Of Changes, was released in 2005.
In 2010 Steve recorded on a solo project of Soundgarden bassist Ben Sheppard. In 2011 he recorded on the Reference Recordings label with Emmy nominated composer/percussionist Jim Brock , and also appeared in concert with Bay Area composer Jon Jang.
